CRiS Total Loss Re-Registration Inspections

Striving to keep our road users and caravan owners safe, AWS members are able to carry out Total Loss Re-Registration Inspections on behalf of the Central Registration & Identification Scheme (CRiS).

If your caravan has previously been written off and you have made the necessary repairs and are now looking to re-register it with CRiS, a mandatory inspection is required by an AWS workshop.

Book a Total Loss Re-Registration Inspection with an Approved Workshop.

What Category of Write Off Can Be Re-registered with CriS?

This inspection covers both Category S and, more recently Category N insurance write off caravans.

Cat S (formally Cat C) Write Off

The vehicle is repairable but the costs exceed the vehicles value. Can re appear on the road.

Cat N (formally Cat D) Write Off

The vehicle is repairable but the repair costs are significant compared with the vehicles value including time delays to source parts. Can re appear on the road.

What is the process of getting your caravan re-registered with CRiS?

To have a previously written-off caravan re-registered with CRiS, the vehicle must be first inspected by a qualified engineer at an AWS workshop.

1- Find an Approved AWS workshop in your area using our find an approved workshop tool. For a full list of participating workshops, select the radio button labelled ‘CRiS Total Loss Re-Registration’.
2- Instruct the AWS engineer to carry out the re-registration inspection of the caravan
3- Once the inspection is completed, the engineer will provide you with a copy of the completed report and submit a copy through to CRiS.
4- The engineer will also contact CRiS to notify them of the completed inspection
5- Once the CRiS database has been updated to reflect the outcome of the inspection, the engineer will advise you if it can/cannot be re-registered with CRiS.

What’s included in a CRiS Total Loss Re-Registration Inspection?

The inspection is in relation to the viewable condition of the caravan at the time inspection only and does not include any removal/dismantling of parts, testing of appliances, testing of the electrical or gas systems or testing for damp.

The engineer will ask you to disclose the extent of the damage which rendered the caravan a total loss category S or N as well as any other relevant information that could influence the inspection and completed report.

The Total Loss Re-Registration Inspection includes:

Visual inspection of the interior of the caravan, including:

- Cupboards, shelves and furniture
- Appliances - heaters, cookers, microwaves, fridges
- Toilet and shower units
- Gas and electrical
- Water pipes and heating unit

Visual inspection of the exterior of the caravan, including:

- All tyres
- Body panels
- Corner steadies
- Doors and hatch lids
- Windows
- Front and rear lights
- Reflectors

Based on this inspection, the engineer will deem whether or not the caravan has undergone satisfactory level of repair for it to be considered roadworthy and recommended for re-registration with CRiS. It’s important to note that during the inspection, no dismantling is carried out and the findings are based on a visual inspection only.

Benefits of Re-Registering your Caravan with CRiS:

• Proof that you are the registered owner
• Tacking of Caravan History
• Assists the police in the event of theft

Does this report confirm the caravan is roadworthy?

The CRiS report process is purely for the use of NCC CRiS to confirm that the caravan is in a visually complete condition. There is no warranty that the caravan is roadworthy or meets any legal requirements to be towed on UK roads. The engineers report is not a statement of roadworthiness, nor is an expert witness report or service.
